I was back on the Dad Lit Pod with Dan to talk about a recent novel called Where When It Rains by John Duffy. It's one of my favourite books of 2025 and absolutely warrants a deeper dive into its pages.

From there, the conversation progresses (digresses?) into whether there is space for novels like this one in today's culture and the lack of millennial male authors in the literary fiction world. Would a book like Portnoy’s Complaint be published today? Does the world in 2025 really need 300 pages of Philip Roth cranking his hog? Thankfully, Duffy's novel is much more than that.

Surf City Acid Drop by Craig Terlson

I wrote an intro for the re-release of Craig Terlson's Surf City Acid Drop, a cult PI novel that kicks off the Luke Fischer series. It is a throwback to the Travis McGee and James Crumley style of shaggy dog detective novels, yet finds its own groove.

It started out harmless enough, where I talked about the book itself and where it sits in the history of the genre, but in true shaggy dog fashion I was soon on many tangents: Shania Twain, French existentialism, New Orleans jazz, Edward Hopper, subprime mortgages, and killer monkeys in Paris.
